Specifically, I recommend joining at least two to three clubs and becoming a leader in at least one of them. It doesn’t matter what kind of clubs you join—whether you’re president of the honor society or captain of your esports team, both are equally valuable. The main benefit of extracurriculars is showing that you have people skills and can organize events outside of academics.

Some great options for extracurriculars include:

• National Honor Society
• Future Business Leaders of America
• Sports teams (tennis, swimming, football, etc.)
• Service organizations or philanthropy events
• Unique clubs like your school’s TV station or esports team

Once you join a club, it’s important to get a leadership position. You don’t have to be president—being treasurer or vice president is fine. Leadership shows scholarship boards and colleges that you’re invested in what you do, and investment and leadership skills are highly valued.

If you’re a junior or senior and feel like you’ve drifted through high school without getting involved, it’s not too late. As soon as you join a club, you can add it to your resume and start contributing right away. Remember the Chinese proverb:

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, but the second-best time is today. “

Simply put, if you only focus on academics, it’s hard to set yourself apart. You need to show colleges and scholarship boards that you have leadership skills, communication abilities, and can organize events. Step one is to get involved in as many extracurriculars as you can handle, and don’t forget to get a leadership position.

Step 2: Develop a Path of Study

Step two is more introspective—it’s about developing a path of study that you’re interested in pursuing. This doesn’t have to be final, but it’s attractive to colleges if their candidate has a plan. Think of scholarships as investments. You need to portray yourself as a good investment opportunity.

Here’s how to do it:

1. Select a major of study at your college of choice.
2. Write down a topic or interest within that major that you’re specifically interested in exploring.
3. Make a list of how going to that college or receiving that scholarship will help you achieve your goals.

Spend an hour brainstorming what you want to do. This will lay the foundation for your future steps and make getting a scholarship much easier. As the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland said, If you don’t know where you want to go, it doesn’t matter which way you go. So, figure out your direction.

Step 3: Develop an X Factor Project

Step three is the most important part of this framework. Even with great grades and extracurriculars, it’s hard to compete for top scholarships. To stand out, you need an X Factor project—a non-school-related project that highlights your skills and interests in your field of study.

For example, my friend started a small hustle agency called Maerkevich Media and Marketing, where my team Paddedvibez built WordPress websites for his local businesses. He learned the skill from a three-hour YouTube tutorial and cold-emailed organizations in his hometown. This project proved to the scholarship committee that he had initiative, actual skills, and made his application unique.

When choosing your X Factor project, keep these tips in mind:

1. Pick something realistic: Choose a project you can complete in about six months.
2. Show, don’t just tell: Create something tangible, like a website, portfolio, or YouTube video.
3. Relate it to your major: If you’re a computer science major, write a program. If you’re a nurse, organize a health initiative.
4. Make it service-oriented: If possible, create something that helps others or serves the community.

Document your project and package it in an appealing way. Take photos, create a website, or make a YouTube video about it. This step is what he credit with helping him land his scholarship, so don’t skip it!

Step 4: Find Scholarship Opportunities

Step four is about finding the actual scholarship opportunities. There are two ways to approach this:

1. Prioritize where you go to college: Focus on your dream school, but recognize that you might have fewer scholarship opportunities.
2. Prioritize how you go to college: Go wherever you get the most money and the best opportunities.

Here are three ways to find scholarships:

1. Scholarship search engines: Use websites like Scholarship.com or Scholarship Owl.
2. Guidance counselors: They often know about local scholarships with less competition.
3. University websites: Look for recurring legacy scholarship programs that offer full-ride scholarships.

Compile a list of your top five to ten scholarships and start applying.

Step 5: Write a Killer Scholarship Essay

Step five is the scholarship essay, which is pivotal to your application. The key is to nail both the content and the style.

• Content: Write about your X Factor project. Highlight your thought process, skills, and how the project sets you apart. You can also talk about a difficulty you overcame or emphasize service to others.
• Style: Write in a narrative style, telling a story. Use active voice, vivid language, and keep your writing concise. Use tools like Grammarly or Scribbr to enhance your writing.

After writing your essay, seek feedback. My friend used Reddit to get anonymous feedback from strangers, which helped him refine his essay over a month. Don’t skip this step—your essay can make or break your application.

Step 6: Organize the Rest of Your Application

Step six is about organizing the other elements of your application, such as your resume, letters of recommendation, and any additional essays.

• Resume: Keep it to one page, but don’t leave out important details. Use quantifiable results (e.g., “Raised $2,000 for local veterans”) and make it easy to read.
• Letters of Recommendation: Choose teachers related to your field of study who know you well and can write a strong letter. Give them plenty of time to write it.
• Additional Essays: Treat these with the same care as your main essay.

Make sure there are no weak links in your application. Every detail matters.

Step 7: Repeat the Process

Step seven is about persistence. Apply to multiple scholarships, but focus on a few that are worth your time and effort. My friend applied to five major scholarships and got one, which was all that mattered. Don’t get discouraged by rejections—each one is a learning opportunity. Keep going, and if you follow this framework, you’ll maximize your chances of landing a full-ride scholarship.
