We live in a time where catastrophic thinking is all too common. I fell into this trap when I started blogging, constantly believing I was doing much worse than I actually was. Catastrophic thinking distorts your perspective, making you assume the worst-case scenario because you’re scared of the unknown and too impatient to wait for results. This often leads to self-sabotage and giving up before you’ve even had a chance to succeed.

When my blog finally started to gain traction, I realized that I wasn’t failing—I just hadn’t given myself enough time to see the results. You might think, “I’ve posted 20 articles, and there’s no traffic. I must be doing something wrong.” But that’s not true. Sometimes, you just need to keep going. Success often requires more time and effort than we anticipate. As Alex Hormozi aptly put it, “You severely underestimate the volume required to achieve success.”

So, don’t judge your progress too early. Create 50, 100, or even 200 pieces of content if necessary. The more you create, the higher your odds of success. The moment you stop, your chances of success start to diminish. Stay the course, and you might surprise yourself.

2. Celebrate Small Wins

In the beginning, I shrugged off my first $150 from blogging because I was already earning more through freelancing, and my friends were making six figures. I let the comparison game spoil what should have been a significant milestone for me. It wasn’t until much later that I realized the importance of celebrating those small victories.

Every milestone, no matter how small, is worth celebrating. Not everyone reaches those points, and recognizing them can keep you motivated on your journey.

3. Doing Is Just as Important as Learning

There’s no doubt that educating yourself is crucial, but don’t let the excitement of learning overshadow the importance of taking action. In the early days of my business, I often got sucked into learning everything about a subject before doing anything with it. But no matter how much you learn, you’re still a beginner until you start doing.

This reminds me of a story from my school days. I had a friend who hadn’t kissed a girl yet and was getting nervous as we got older. He started watching YouTube videos and reading articles on how to kiss. Finally, I told him, “You’re never going to learn your way into your first kiss. You have to go out and put yourself in a position to be kissed.” Sure enough, two weeks later, he had his first kiss and a girlfriend 😉 lol.

Theory is great, but reality often clashes with it. Don’t be a course collector or knowledge hoarder—get started. You’ll learn and grow as you go.

4. It’s Not the Task That’s Hard—It’s Your Resistance to It

Blogging isn’t inherently difficult. If you’ve taken our courses or read our guides, you know how to do it. The real challenge lies in overcoming your resistance to doing the work. You might think you’re missing a crucial piece of knowledge, but the truth is, most people don’t want to do the hard work either.

For me, it was the realization that I was resisting the discomfort of the work itself. It’s miserable to work all day and then spend more time on a side business that isn’t making money yet. But focus is a skill you can train. Like meditation, it involves bringing yourself back to the task at hand and being fully present in it. The more you resist, the harder it becomes.

5. Collaboration Over Competition

In my early days of blogging I knew successful bloggers who make $5,000 or $10,000 a month on their own, and that’s impressive. But I also knew bloggers who make $100,000 a month or more, and guess what? Almost none of them did it alone. They collaborated with others, had business partners, or worked with their community.

The old African proverb rings true: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” You can achieve success on your own, but to reach greater heights, collaboration is key. Don’t let ego hold you back—embrace the help of others, teach what you know, and learn from those around you. Opportunities will come when you open yourself up to collaboration.

6. Pivot, Pivot, Pivot

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that success doesn’t have to come from just blogging. I started with blogging, moved to freelancing, then blogging again, consulting, and eventually buying more blogs. You have to start somewhere, but be open to pivoting as you go.

What you envision at the start won’t be what you end up with, and that’s okay. The detours along the way are what make the journey worthwhile. Blogging is an excellent place to start because it teaches you so many online skills. Pick a few, focus on them, and let the journey unfold naturally.

When I was in your shoes, none of this made sense to me. I’d dismiss these lessons, thinking that successful people had it easy or got lucky. But the truth is, if I can do it, and so many others can do it, then you can too.

Not so fast. The reality is that if your content doesn’t directly relate to the product you’re promoting, you could earn nothing—even with a million views. The audience reading your travel post may not even know what a VPN is, much less have a need for one.

This is where the sales funnel comes in. The sales funnel is a marketing concept that helps you understand where your audience is in their buying journey. Let’s break it down:

  1. No Knowledge: At the top of the funnel are people who just stumble upon your content. They aren’t looking to buy anything; they might not even understand what you’re selling. In the VPN example, a person reading a travel blog probably doesn’t have “buy VPN” on their mind.
  2. Awareness: These are people who know a product like a VPN exists but aren’t ready to buy. For example, readers of my coding blog post knew about coding courses but weren’t ready to purchase one.
  3. Interest: People in this stage are interested in solutions but haven’t made a purchase decision. A blog post about “10 Tips for Staying Safe Online” might attract people interested in online security, making them more likely to purchase a VPN.
  4. Buying Intent: The holy grail of affiliate marketing—people who are actively looking to buy. They are searching for terms like “best VPNs” and just need a recommendation to complete the purchase.

Why Targeting Matters in Affiliate Marketing

If you’re trying to make money through affiliate marketing, your content needs to target people further down the sales funnel—those with buying intent. Here’s why:

  • If you’re promoting a product to a general audience with no intent to buy, like I did with my coding blog, you’ll struggle to make sales—even with tons of traffic.
  • On the other hand, if your content addresses a specific problem and offers a product as a solution, you’re much more likely to see conversions.

Let’s return to our VPN example. Instead of writing a travel blog post and slapping a VPN link in there, imagine writing a blog post like, “How to Stay Safe Online While Traveling.” People searching for ways to protect themselves online are much more likely to be interested in purchasing a VPN, and that’s where you start making sales.

The Numbers: How Many Readers Does It Take to Make a Sale?

The unfortunate truth is that even with a targeted audience, conversion rates can still be low. For example, in a well-targeted blog post, you might see only 1 in 1,000 readers making a purchase. So, with 1,000 targeted readers, you might make 10 sales, earning $300 if you’re getting a $30 commission per sale.

But that’s still way better than earning nothing from a million random readers, right?

The Long Game vs. Quick Wins

Here’s another harsh reality: if you want to earn big money simply by promoting brands to a huge audience, you’ll need millions of followers or readers. Big companies pay for brand awareness, even if there are no immediate sales.

If a blog post with millions of readers promotes a VPN service, those readers might not buy right away, but they’ll become familiar with the brand. This familiarity increases the chances of a sale later when they see the product elsewhere.

However, if you’re not a huge influencer or don’t have millions of readers, this strategy won’t work for you. The better approach is to focus on direct sales through targeted content, even if it means grinding for a few years to build an audience that converts.

How to Fix Your Affiliate Marketing Strategy

If you’re starting out and want to see results faster, here’s what you need to do:

  1. Stop writing random content. Focus on content that addresses specific problems and targets people with buying intent.
  2. Research your audience’s needs. Write blog posts that help people solve problems and offer affiliate products as part of the solution.
  3. Target the right stage of the sales funnel. Your content should attract people who are ready to buy, not just those casually browsing.

Why AI Isn’t the Magic Solution

Blogging is similar to sports or business: the best performer gets the reward. In sports, it’s the top athlete who wins the trophy, and in business, it’s the best product that conquers the market. The same applies to blogging: to succeed, your content needs to outperform the competition. It’s not enough to match others; your content needs to be 10 times better than what’s already out there.

After writing over 1,000 blog posts across my blogs, I’ve learned that producing the best post isn’t always possible. For example, a topic like “What is the capital of France?” only requires a single sentence: “The capital of France is Paris.” This is a straightforward answer, and you can’t really improve upon it. Even if you add more details, there’s no reason for Google to favor your blog over the millions of others that have covered this exact topic.

The Challenges of Blogging in Saturated Niches

In competitive spaces, especially for simple topics like the one above, it becomes nearly impossible to rank high. Google already has millions of posts to choose from. So, what’s the solution?

To write a blog post that stands out, you must:

  • Share firsthand experiences.
  • Demonstrate expertise.
  • Solve a problem for your audience.
  • Offer a unique angle no one else has explored.
  • Make your content long, detailed, and easy to understand.
  • Use original or high-quality images that support the message.

Simply put, your blog post should be so good that it would be a mistake for your audience to read anything else. However, you can’t apply these strategies to every topic. For instance, writing an in-depth post about the capital of France would be pointless. Instead, your success as a blogger depends on choosing the right topics and providing the best answers.

The Reality of Choosing Blog Topics

One of the biggest realizations I had in my blogging journey was that not every topic is worth pursuing. You could be the best writer in the world, but if your content doesn’t provide something new or add value, it won’t succeed.

To succeed, you need to focus on content gaps—topics that aren’t oversaturated but still have potential for traffic. Ideally, you want to find newer, trendy topics where the content out there isn’t as strong as it could be. Being early to the party gives you a huge advantage.

Example: Why AI Software Reviews Work

In my case, I’ve made most of my blogging income by writing reviews of AI software. Why? Because the competition in this niche is relatively new, and most of the content is low quality. If you search for “best AI tools for students,” you’ll find many blog posts that list products without actually testing them. They’re just written to get clicks and affiliate commissions.

I saw an opportunity to provide real value. Instead of regurgitating what was already out there, I spent hours testing the products myself. As a result, my reviews are more detailed, authentic, and helpful. One of my blog posts, which has over 2,000 words and 10 original images, has made me $2,500 and counting because it’s significantly better than what existed before.

Why AI-Generated Content Falls Short

This brings us to AI-generated content. While AI can help with some aspects of blogging, it can’t do everything. It doesn’t test products, take original images, or create visuals that enhance your message. Most importantly, AI can’t deliver the authenticity and value that readers crave.

I use AI tools all the time, but they only save me about 2-3% of my time. This may allow me to take an extra week off every year, but that’s not the same as automating an entire blog. Despite what some online tutorials suggest, you won’t make thousands of dollars as a beginner blogger with just a few months of AI-generated posts.

If you want to succeed in blogging, especially if you’re using AI, the key is to focus on quality over quantity. Look for content gaps, create highly valuable posts, and be authentic. AI is a useful tool, but it’s not a magic solution. To stand out, you need to offer something that no one else can.
